Regional & economic cooperation

FDC / Resources / Regional & economic cooperation

FDC has actively fostered regional cooperation within both Asia and the South West Pacific, and importantly, between the Pacific and Asia, for three decades. A seminal paper by Dr Andrew Elek and Dr John Conroy, Building an Asia-Pacific community: Development cooperation within APEC, contributed significantly to shaping the APEC Manila Declaration on Economic Cooperation and Development of November 1996. Bernard Wood’s insights on development cooperation in the 21st century, addressing assistance with governance and conflict management, controversies about globalisation, and reforming ‘donor-driven’ aid at the time, though published 20 years ago, remain valid today. FDC’s distinctive South Pacific and Caribbean Island Economies Comparative Study identified measures to stimulate the growth of the indigenous private sector, working mechanisms for private-public sector collaboration, and a regional approach to export and investment promotion and other economic themes.
