The Mekong Inclusive Growth Forum, an initiative of FDC and its inclusive finance community, the Banking with the Poor Network (BWTP), was convened in Bangkok, Thailand from 2-3 October. Over 40 senior government officials and industry experts participated in the roundtable style dialogue to discuss policy and regulatory issues impacting growth opportunities for.

The Forum was established as a way to enhance economic development in the region by identifying priority actions and facilitating greater cooperation between Mekong countries. The Forum provided a platform for industry experts and senior government officials to discuss, debate and prioritise key actions that can be taken to enable and accelerate development outcomes for the region; including the opportunities being enabled through innovative digital technologies.

Centered on the theme of ‘Achieving Regional Connectivity in the Digital Era‘, the Forum explored a range of issues critical to achieving inclusive growth including:

  • The importance of regional connectivity and integration to support sustainable growth
  • Enhancing opportunities for cross-border supply chain financing
  • Unlocking the potential of remittances as a key driver of growth; and
  • The opportunities and challenges associated with digital technologies.

FDC and BWTP hosted the Mekong Inclusive Growth Forum in in partnership with Appui au Développement Autonome (ADA), the Greater Mekong Sub-Region Business Council (GMSR-BC) and the Fiscal Policy Office of Thailand’s Ministry of Finance. The Forum was jointly hosted by the Thailand Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB), the United Nations Capital Development Fund’s SHIFT ASEAN Programme and the Expanding Financial Access Myanmar Programme. SHIFT ASEAN is supported by the Australian Government.
